According to the Surgeon General’s 2000 report on Oral Health in America, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Children from low-income families suffer twice as many cavities as their more affluent peers, and their disease is also more likely to go untreated.
Ocean Dental clinics provide quality dental care to the most underserved socioeconomic group in the country. Ocean Dental believes the type of payment should never dictate the availability of quality dental care.
The initial response to Medicaid acceptance was overwhelming and far reaching. Clinics accepting Medicaid are very limited due to extensive financial and scheduling complications that a fee-for-service office does not have to deal with. Over the last two years, Ocean Dental has opened eight more clinics for children and young adults brining the total number to 15 clinics in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Ohio. During the next year Ocean Dental will be expanding their outreach by opening new clinics in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa and Texas.
“Part of what makes Ocean Dental unique is not the work done, but how it is done,” states Ocean Dental COO, Joe Akin. “Every clinic is designed to create a unique experience for the patient, especially children. Each new facility’s interior reflects an ocean theme from front to back, using vibrant colors and tropical decorations,” said Akin. To add to the experience, televisions hang from the ceiling above each chair to keep kids entertained during treatment. The professional staff is well versed in dealing with children and young adults. Altogether, it insures a positive, memorable and fun experience for patients and their families.
In the past school year, Ocean Dental has given back to most of the communities it serves as well, providing free programs involving dental screenings and oral hygiene instruction. To date, Ocean Dental has provided this cost-free service to over 50,000 children and young adults. This number includes kids in more than 60 public schools, 25 daycares, and numerous Headstart and Early Headstart programs. With the overwhelming success of this program, Ocean Dental is energized and gearing up to provide information and instruction to even more kids in the future.
